Not How We Expected to Spend Memorial Day

As many of you already know Todd was admitted to the hospital on Sunday morning. It all started with a toothache on Saturday night. About 1am he woke up in pretty serious pain and some slight swelling of the left side of his face. We decided to wait until morning when an Urgent Care center would open and go get it checked out. At about 6am he was in unbearable pain and the swelling had doubled. Off to the ER we go.

We arrived at the ER a little after 6am and he was immediately seen. They gave him some morphine and took him to get a CT scan. The ER doctor told us it looked as though it wasn't an abscessed tooth but there was some kind of infection and Todd would need to be admitted for at least 24 hours to be put on IV antibiotics. We were both really surprised at the seriousness. The doctor said it was a dangerous infection and it was threatening his eye and vision. And if not treated immediately it could work its way into his brain.

So at about 10am we were given a room. The swelling got even worse the first day then it seemed to stop but didn't go away. I think this was the longest two days of my life. I was constantly worried, especially when we didn't see much reduction in the swelling for a day and a half. And also the fact that he was seeing multiple doctors and they didn't seem to be on the same page. Neither one of them really knew what the heck was going on, other than he had an infection. They kept telling us an oral surgeon would stop by for a consult but because of the holiday weekend we didn't see one until Tuesday afternoon. When the oral surgeon finally came by he said it was clearly an abscessed tooth. He was discharged shortly after and sent home with antibiotics and instructons to see his dentist and get a root canal on the tooth.

The official diagnosis was an abscessed tooth that caused a streptococcal infection that caused cellulitus in his face. Why the ER doctor said it wasn't an abscessed tooth I'm not sure.

So that was our fun filled Memorial Day weekend. I'm so glad he is ok and feeling better, it was very hard for me to see him like this.

And for those of you who think I'm a horrible wife for posting this pic I did get his permission.

Glad he is better. ER Doctors suck. Rick went in a few weeks ago and they told him he had a hernia, then when we went to the surgeon the next day, he said it wasn't and sent him home.
